Dix Hills, New York

As was the case with most of the State of New York, the area that eventually became known as Dix Hills was once populated by Native Americans. As far back as the late 17th century, in 1699 to be exact, settlers to the “New World” traded goods with the indigenous Secatogue tribe for the land on which Dix Hills now sits. At that time, the Secatogues were common throughout the northern half of what is now New York. When the land was originally acquired, it was known as “Dick’s Hills,” purportedly named for a local native named Dick Pechegan who was likely a  member of the Secatogues. At that time it was a fairly common practice to add an English name, such as Dick, to an indigenous name, hence the name Dick Pechegan. Pechegan’s wigwam and his planted fields became the hilly area’s namesake, known as the shortened “Dix Hills” by 1911. For more than two centuries after the land was traded to settlors it was primarily a farming community. It wasn’t until after World War II that Dix Hills started to urbanize. As of the turn of the 21st century, Dix Hills is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) on Long Island in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2010 Census, almost 30,000 residents called Dix Hills home. The hamlet is known for its quiet, family-oriented neighborhoods and excellent schools, both of which draw families who commute to the Big Apple for work but prefer to live in the peaceful bedroom community.

A well thought out estate plan can – and should – accomplish a wide variety of inter-related goals that do much more than simply create a roadmap for distributing your estate assets after you are gone. The attorneys and staff at Kobrick & Moccia are committed to helping our friends and neighbors in the Dix Hills, New York community create an estate plan that accomplishes all their goals and meets all of their needs.  We look forward to the opportunity to help you with your comprehensive estate plan.

A successful estate plan requires a solid foundation; however, it also requires nurturing. Consequently, your estate plan is not something you create and forget about once it is in place. On the contrary, your estate plan needs to be reviewed and updated to reflect changes that occur in your life. Your initial estate plan may be rather simplistic, focusing almost entirely on the distribution of your estate assets in the event of your death; however, you will soon outgrow that plan. Marriage and/or parenthood means you now have a family to protect and provide for in your plan. As a result, your estate plan will need to be updated to include components such as incapacity planning, asset protection, and probate avoidance. You may also want to add a trust into your plan to protect your minor children’s inheritance until they reach the age of majority. As you move into middle age, you should begin merging your retirement plans with your estate plan to ensure that the two plans work in harmony with each other. Long before you reach retirement age, however, you should also consider adding Medicaid planning to your estate plan to ensure that you can afford the high cost of long-term care. The estate planning attorneys at Kobrick & Moccia would be honored to help you create and update your individualized estate plan to ensure that everything and everyone that matters to you is protected.
