Mamaroneck, New York
Located in the southern tip of the state in Westchester County, the town of Mamaroneck encompasses about 14 square miles and was home to 29,156 at the 2010 Census. Within the town are the villages of Larchmont and the Village of Mamaroneck (part of which is located in the adjacent town of Rye).
The history of the town of Mamaroneck dates back to 1661 when the land was purchased from Native American Chief Wappaquewam and his brother Manhatahan by an Englishman named John Richbell. The town was not officially created by the New York Legislature until March 7, 1788.
Around the turn of the 20th century, the area of Mamaroneck located closest to the water thrived and grew. Larchmont Manor, in particular, became well known as a summer resort for families from New York City who were drawn to its beaches along Long Island Sound.
Growth in the area led to the formal creation of the two villages within the town of Mamaroneck. An increased need for adequate water supply, sewage disposal, garbage collection, sidewalks, and improved street lighting, police and fire protection led to the residents of Larchmont Manor obtaining a charter from the Legislature under which they incorporated their section of town into a village in 1891. Shortly thereafter, residents of the most developed and populated sections of the towns of Mamaroneck and Rye voted to incorporate as the Village of Mamaroneck. Following World War I, the unincorporated section of the town grew sufficiently that the State Legislature granted the town government the local powers to provide local services it had previously granted to the villages by charter.
The course at Winged Foot Golf Club was constructed and opened in June 1923 and has since been host to a number of professional tournaments, including the 1997 PGA Championship and the 1929, 1959, 1974, 1984 and 2006 U.S. Open. Mamaroneck is also known for having introduced New York’s first vegetable-oil-powered garbage truck in 2008. In 2014, the Town of Mamaroneck was ranked first in the list of the top 10 places to live in New York State, according to the national online real estate brokerage Movoto.

At Kobrick & Moccia we have dedicated our practice to the issues we feel matter most to our friends and neighbors – protecting yourself, your assets, and your loved ones through the creation of a comprehensive estate plan. Working with the right estate planning attorney is crucial to the creation of that plan. Knowing how difficult it can be to discuss highly personal financial and family matters with a virtual stranger though is one of the many reasons why we strive to create lifelong relationships with our Mamaroneck, New York estate planning clients.
For your estate plan to be successful it needs to be an ongoing venture that is continuously reviewed and updated to reflect changes that occur in your life. Your initial estate planning needs may be as simplistic as ensuring that you don’t leave behind an intestate estate should something happen to you. For that, a basic Last Will and Testament is sufficient. It won’t be long, however, before you outgrow that simple plan. Marriage and/or the birth of a child will cause you to expand your estate planning needs and goals. Protecting your spouse and/or child will likely dictate changes to your plan, such as the addition of a trust to protect your minor child’s inheritance. Incapacity planning will also need to become part of your overall plan. The growth of your estate itself may also require you to incorporate asset protection and tax avoidance tools and strategies into your plan. Additional goals such as probate avoidance may also become important to you. Middle age should have you contemplating your retirement years and the high cost of long-term care. That, in turn, may dictate the need to add Medicaid planning to your estate plan to ensure that you can afford the cost of that care. If you have strong beliefs regarding end of life medical treatment and/or the disposition of your body after your death, you will also want to ensure that those beliefs are honored by including funeral planning and the appropriate advance directives in your comprehensive estate plan.
The estate planning attorneys at Kobrick & Moccia would be honored to help you create and update your individualized estate plan to ensure that everything and everyone that matters to you is protected.
