Rockville Centre, New York
Located in in the southwestern section of the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York, the village of Rockville Centre covers no more than 3.4 square miles and is home to approximately 25,000 residents.
The Reckouakie tribe of Native Americans originally lived in the area that would eventually become Rockville Centre until the arrival of Dutch and English settlers in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. The hamlet was named “Rockville Centre” in 1849, after local Methodist preacher and community leader Mordecai “Rock” Smith. A volunteer fire company was founded in 1875, a public library opened in 1882, and the South Shore’s first high school opened its doors in 1892. The following year, in 1893, Rockville Centre was incorporated as a village. In February 1891 the Bank of Rockville Centre became the first commercial bank operated on Long Island’s south shore. The bank occupied the corner of Merrick Road and North Village Avenue. Banking was a growth industry in the Village, and by 1929, Rockville Centre had earned a reputation as a leading financial center for the Island. Rockville Centre emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as a commuter community connected to New York by the Long Island Rail Road. In 1915, the New York Tribune went so far as to declare that Rockville Centre was a place in which “the average mortal could live happily.” Today, the Village of Rockville Centre boasts 9,200 housing units, more than 400 retail and service shops as well as professional and corporate offices, seven parochial and public schools, a college, and 15 diverse religious denominations. In addition, there are over 150 acres of parks, ball-fields and playgrounds, and a municipal government which provides the most comprehensive range of services anywhere on Long Island, according to the village.

Unlike most legal endeavors, estate planning is not something that is ever truly finished. Instead, estate planning is really a lifelong process that works best when you establish a solid relationship with your estate planning attorney. Your initial estate plan may be rather simple because you have yet to acquire a significant estate nor yet started a family. As such, your focus may be on nothing more than ensuring you do not leave behind an intestate estate should something happen to you. As both your estate and your family grow, however, your estate plan will need to grow along with them. With a family to protect you will want to add incapacity planning to your overall plan as well as estate planning tools and strategies designed for parents with minor children. As your assets grow, components such as asset protection and tax avoidance may be added to your plan. As you look to the future, you will want to merge your retirement plans with your estate plans to make sure they work in harmony with one another. Medicaid planning should also become part of your comprehensive estate plan as you near retirement age. Finally, you may wish to consider adding advanced directives to your estate plan to ensure that your wishes will be honored at the end of your life.
